Poetry

by Avrom Sutzkever

A dark violet plum,
the last one on the tree,
thin-skinned and delicate like a pupil
that by night in the dew had slaked
love, vision, squirming,
and had shrunk
with the morning star in the dew --
That is poetry. Touch it in such a way
that not a trace of your fingers will be seen.
